Shallots are remarkably easy to grow from seed. Red loam to black soils is highly suited for growing small onions. It requires sufficient soil moisture during its growing period.
Seeds are first sown in well prepared nursery beds or Germination tray/bags/Garden Soil. Seedlings of almost 15 cms height and 1 cm neck diameter are ideal for transplanting and this can be achieved in 6-8 weeks. However, it varies from 6-10 weeks depending on soil, climate and receipt of moisture. There is a practice of topping seedlings at the time of transplanting if seedlings are over-grown.
Irrigate at the time of planting of seedlings and third day and later at weekly intervals. Withhold irrigation 10 days before harvest. Apply organic fertilizers in frequent intervals depending on soil type and climate. This variety of shallots take 4-5 months to get harvest.
If you opt a pot culturing, arrange bigger pots/grow bags as the plant needs space to divide and create new bulbs. Harvest once the foliage has yellowed and feel died .
