Author Info: Manoranjan Byapari was born in the mid-fifties in Bangladesh. His family migrated to West Bengal in India when he was three. He had to leave home at the age of fourteen to do odd jobs. At the age of twenty-four, he came into contact with the Naxals. He was sent to jail during this time, where he taught himself to read and write. After his release, he worked as a rickshaw-puller in Kolkata. He has published twenty-two books since. Until 2018, he worked as a cook at the Hellen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Blind. He has received the Hindu Prize and the Gateway LitFest Writer of the Year. Also, the English translation of his novel Theres Gunpowder in the Air was shortlisted for the JCB Prize, the DSC Prize, the Crossword Book Award and the Mathrubhumi Book of the Year Prize 2019. Currently, Byapari is serving as the chairperson of the newly appointed Dalit Sahitya Akademi in Bengal.
