The New Theatre is a theatre in Reading, England. The New Theatre is the home of the Reading Symphony Orchestra and Reading Youth Opera. It was opened as part of the Beeching cuts in 1964. Replacing an earlier theatre called the Coliseum. Which had been opened in 1887 by impresario George Edwardes, who also ran London’s Circle Theatre (which later became one of his most successful venues). The new building cost £3 million to build and seated 2,250 people with seating on two levels. 1,000 seats at ground level plus another 500 seats on two floors above that (the house was divided into two sections).
