Where is the West Coast of Florida Located?
Between magical Orlando and trendy Miami, the coast that is bathed by the Gulf of Mexico is home to a coastline of incredible beaches, which attract both locals and tourists. These true paradises are known for their resemblance to the paradisiacal landscapes of the Caribbean
Based on personal experience, our tip for discovering the best beaches in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, is to hit the road and explore one city at a time. That way, you already appreciate the look of the region during the journey and have the freedom to stop wherever you want to get to know it.
You decide how it is best for you to take this route. If you prefer, you can rent a simple car and stop at hotels to rest. But if you’re up for an adventure, you can do like us and rent a motorhome and make it your mobile home for a few days.
Travelling North-South
The starting point of this region is the city of Clearwater, travelling north-south, while the end point is in the Everglades. This is the best route if you are departing from Orlando or Tampa, but if you are departing from Miami, just do the opposite.
From Clearwater to the Everglades is 386 km, a route that would take 5h30m straight, without stops. Depending on how many travel days you have available, it’s important to organise how much time you’ll dedicate to each city. Know now that you don’t want to leave!
Airport on the West Coast of Florida
If you are planning a trip exclusively to discover the West Coast of Florida, the best way to save travel time is to choose to disembark at the Tampa airport. This is the main airport on the coast and receives direct flights from Panama City.
With the airline Copa Airlines, only this connection would be made, from its origin. Upon arriving in Tampa, you can pick up your rental car or motorhome and perhaps start this tour at the famous Busch Gardens with plenty of adrenaline on the extreme roller coasters.
If you’re leaving from Orlando or Miami, heading to the West Coast, you can decide whether you’re going to opt for a domestic flight to Tampa to Miami Airport Car Service, or if you’re going there by car. Important: the roads in the region are well signposted, so just have the documentation ok and enjoy the trip.
When is the best time to visit the West Coast of Florida?
The busiest time, which is the famous high season, runs from February to April. During this period you can count on sunny, warm days and a very pleasant water temperature, in addition to the incredible crystalline colour on all the beaches on the west coast of Florida.
Despite having many more people visiting the region in the high season, this is the perfect period for that energy-renewing swim in the sea, chilled in just the right measure. Prices may be higher, however if you want to enjoy the best of the beaches, this is the time.
During the summer, which happens in the US between June and September, it usually rains daily at the end of the day and the water is very hot, not exactly refreshing. If that warmer water is your thing, this might be the best time to visit the best beaches on Florida’s West Coast.
How many days on the West Coast of Florida?
Honestly, this is one of those perfect destinations for those who have a sunny soul and don’t live far from a good beach. The urge is to live in one of the cities on the West Coast of Florida and guarantee your little place in the sun once and for all.
For a shorter trip, we recommend a road trip of at least 5 days. During this period, you can make a more objective itinerary and visit the best beaches in Florida Gulf of Mexico. Depending on your disposition, it is worth knowing more than one city per day.
Now, if you want to do a more complete road trip, book about 10 whole days to guarantee that you will have more time to enjoy it calmly. The advantage is getting to know more places, such as local shops, trying the food in each city and exploring the beaches better.
