Abingdon, a small city in the central part of Virginia, is one of my favorite places to visit. Gorgeous architecture fills the place, offering plenty to do when not exploring its historic sites.
I’ve been living here for almost seven years now and still find new things every time I go back!
Abingdon
Abingdon is a market town in the Cotswolds, England. It’s located on the River Thames and has many historical buildings. The town has a population of over 10,000 people and is home to several colleges and universities.
Alfred the Great founded the town in 919 A.D., naming it after his grandfather Athelstan, who ruled Wessex during pre-dynastic times.
King Alfred’s son Edward fought against William I at Hastings in 1066 and tragically lost his life in the battle. Following his victory over Harold Godwinson on September 2nd, William I was crowned king. However, Edward’s reign was cut short as he passed away 15 years later during the winter of 1111-1122 AD, succumbing to illness caused by wounds sustained in the battle against William II de Clare, the King of Ireland.
The Caves of Abingdon
The caves of Abingdon are a great place to visit, especially if you’re looking for somewhere to relax and recharge. They’re also a great place to learn about history, geology, archaeology, and more!
Rainwater seeping through cracks in the earth over time formed the caves in the limestone rock, which is the same type of rock used as a building material. As this water dripped down through layers of limestone rock it left behind deposits that eventually became stalagmites and stalactites – those beautiful shapes you see hanging from ceilings all over the world today! The calcite formations have been growing ever since then until now there are hundreds of them inside these underground tunnels which date back thousands of years ago when people first started living here full time rather than just passing through during seasonal hunting trips like they do today.”
The River Thames at Abingdon
The River Thames is a great place to go for a walk. It’s an easy walk from Abingdon, and there are lots of things you can do along the way. You could stop by one of the shops or pubs on your way back from lunch, or even just sit in one of those little parks that have benches under trees where you can enjoy some peace and quiet while taking in the views around you.
The River Thames is also a good place to swim if you want something different than swimming pools or beaches although those are obviously pretty cool too. There are several riverside parks along here which make great places for swimming in the summertime – especially if they’re not too busy yet!
Shakespeare’s Birthplace Museum
The Shakespeare’s Birthplace Museum is a museum that tells the story of Shakespeare’s life and times. It opened in 1788 and has been open to the public ever since, making it one of the oldest museums in England.
The birthplace itself is located in Abingdon, which was once home to William Shakespeare (1564–1616). You can go inside this building and see some artifacts from his life as well as other things relating to him such as his signature on documents or his writings on paper. There are also displays about how people viewed him during his lifetime and what kind of work he did at different times in his life such as writing plays about kings who were considered heroes by many people living during those times!
If you’re looking for something fun but educational then this would definitely be an experience worth having!
Cotswold Hills Walk
The Cotswolds Walk is a great way to explore the Cotswolds. It’s also an excellent way to get to know your surroundings and meet some locals who can tell you all about the area’s history and culture, as well as give you tips on what places are worth visiting.
The walk starts at Chipping Campden, which is home to several historic sites including Chipping Campden Hall (the former home of William Stukeley) and Chipping Campden Castle the former seat of the Dukes of Beaufort. After completing this section of the walk, you’ll be able to make your way through the beautiful countryside until you reach Ledbury where there are many things worth seeing such as Ledbury Town House Museum & Art Gallery; St Mary’s Church; Shakespeare’s Birthplace Museum & Visitors Centre; Caerwent Iron Age Hillfort Site, etc.
